I am sad today on hearing about the death of Steve Jobs. He was an inspiration to me. I used his first personal computer in 1984, ie, Apple II. I continued to use Macintosh till 1987. He was master inventor, father of inventions, champion of user interface, and blender of convenience and aesthetics with machine and technology. I have keenly observed him since 1984 and consider him as the smartest techie in the world who single handedly ushered the revolution of personal computers. Son of a syrian muslim hailing from Homs, he was given up for adoption at birth. He would be known for his exceptional ingenuity and his ever evolving self-image. He shocked almost in every phase of the growth of his company and industry with his vision recognized by his execution.

1972: Jobs enrolls at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, but drops out after a semester.

1974: Jobs works for video game maker Atari and attends meetings of the Homebrew Computer Club with Steve Wozniak, a high school friend who was a few years older.

1975: Jobs and Wozniak attend Homebrew Computer Club meetings.

1976: Apple Computer is formed on April Fool’s Day, shortly after Wozniak and Jobs create a new computer circuit board in a Silicon Valley garage. A third co-founder, Ron Wayne, leaves the company after less than two weeks. The Apple I computer goes on sale by the summer for $666.66

But over the past decade I learned the satisfaction of a machine that works. Its a machine that the boy put most of his life in to, a machine that has the heart of a much older thing, a thing that lay blinking & frantic in a Stanford computer lab somewhere & then, over time, shrank down to something you & I can fit in to our pockets.

I wasnt always a Mac lover. I thought they were over-priced & , the sweet colors far daft for my 486 tastes. Any chip that had the word Power in its name was overcompensating, I wagered.

Lots of complained that the ecosystem that they created was a walled garden, but Id equate it to a pasture. The reason everything looks pretty is because it is out of balance, wrote Zen master Shunryu Suzuki. But its background is always in ideal harmony. In the front, anything can happen. In the back, ideal calm & order.

There is a strain of Web thought that requires us to tear down, to refuse to see the other side. There will be lots of that going on in the next few days as speaking heads talk. But name CEO who, on leaving his company, will raise such a wave of well-wishes & interest? When Michael Dell dodders off or Howard Stringer plops in to a club chair for his final cigar, will someone care the next day?

All of us know the broad strokes: The man got sicker, they quit, kept at it. They embraced a successor & groomed him to be as calm a force as they one time was. They kept us surprised, entertained, constantly speculating. They wondered where they was. If they was well.

Apple’s Steve Jobs has resigned from his position as CEO and Apple has just announced that COO Tim Cook has taken over as CEO.

As COO, Cook was responsible for all of the company’s worldwide sales and operations, including end-to-end management of Apple’s supply chain, sales activities, and service and support in all markets and countries. He also headed Apple’s Macintosh division and plays a key role in the continued development of strategic reseller and supplier relationships, ensuring flexibility in response to an increasingly demanding marketplace.

Before joining Apple, Cook was vice president of Corporate Materials for Compaq and was responsible for procuring and managing all of Compaq’s product inventory. Previous to his work at Compaq, Cook was the chief operating officer of the Reseller Division at Intelligent Electronics. Cook also spent 12 years with IBM, most recently as director of North American Fulfillment where he led manufacturing and distribution functions for IBM’s Personal Computer Company in North and Latin America.

Jobs will be Chairman of the Board of Apple and Cook will take a position on the board as CEO. Jobs actually submitted his resignation to the Board today and ‘strongly recommended’ that the Board name Tim Cook as CEO.

In January, Jobs took an indefinite medical leave of absence from the company, and while he remained as CEO, Cook took on the day-to-day operations for Apple.

Jobs’ previous medical history includes Pancreatic cancer as well as a liver transplant. In 2004, Jobs contracted Pancreatic Cancer, which he beat. Then Jobs underwent a liver transplant in 2009, and also made a full recovery. During Jobs’ absence in 2009, then COO Tim Cook took over Apple’s day-to-day activities.

Apple’s Board of Directors today announced that Steve Jobs has resigned as Chief Executive Officer, and the Board has named Tim Cook, previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, as the company’s new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately.

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”

“The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” added Levinson. “Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”

Jobs submitted his resignation to the Board today and strongly recommended that the Board implement its succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO.
